Autumn Seed

Welcome to our Autumn Seed section. You can read about our products below or select the sub-category links on the left to purchase in our online shop.

Winter Rapeseed

ELAN
His variety is particularly suited for the North and has an average yield and disease profile. Susceptible to Stem Canker however.

CASTILLE
A well established conventional variety first listed in 2005. Good standing ability, slightly susceptible to Light Leaf Spot.

LIONESS
Lioness is currently top of the HGCA recommended list. It yields well and produces very high oil content. Slightly susceptible to Stem Canker.

Winter Barley

2 Row Feed Varieties

CAMION  CPB Twyford
Camion is one of the highest yielding 2 row varieties available. It has very stiff straw, medium length and excellent grain quality with good resistance to Rhynchosporium and Net Blotch. Camion has become one of our most popular varieties.

CARAT  Nickerson
Carat is a very popular high yielding 2 row variety with early maturity. It has excellent grain quality with high specific weight. The straw is stiff but shorter than most other 2 varieties.

HAKA  CPB Twyford
Haka has prove a successful variety in the West. It has particularly bold grain which gives a very good specific weight. It is early to mature, has moderate to long straw and is rated 8 for standing ability in HGCA trials. However, it is only rated 5 for resistance to Rhynchosporium.

SAFFRON  CPB Twyford
This variety has a huge yield (around 6% higher than Carat). It has good all round disease resistance apart from Mildew. A medium length stiff strawed variety.

6 Row Feed Varieties

BOOST  Syngenta
Boost is the 1st hybrid variety with very strong agronomics. It yields 5% above Sequel. It has particularly high specific weight and large grain with low sieving losses. It is the earliest maturing of all varieties. A long strawed variety with good resistance to Rhynchosporium and Net Blotch but susceptible to Mildew and rust diseases.

SEQUEL  Syngenta
Sequel can compare favourable with the 2 row varieties on specific weight. It has long, moderately stiff straw and is very early to mature. It has very good all round disease resistance.

Malting Varieties

FLAGON  Syngenta
This new malting variety is slightly higher yielding than Pearl. However, it will only suit a small number of growers in our region due to it’s weak straw.

PEARL  Nickerson
Pearl has become the most widely grown winter barley. It is fully approved as a malting barley, has reasonable yield ratings and long straw which is moderately stiff. Good on Rhynchosporium, but weak on Net Blotch. Later to mature than most.

Winter Wheat

Group 1 Varieties – Top Quality Breadmaking

HEREWARD RAGT(PBI)
This variety is widely accepted by the Flour Millers. It produces consistently high protein and specific weight but lags some 15% behind the top feed varieties on yield and therefore requires a large premium to compete.

MALACCA  CPB Twyford
This variety yields around 2% higher than Hereward. Short, stiff straw and early maturity. In high-yielding circumstances a “dilution effect” can occur, resulting in lower protein. Specific weights are often lower than other milling varieties.

SOLSTICE  Advanta
A new addition to the Group 1 league this variety has a similar protein content to Malacca but has a distinct yield advantage – only 3% behind Robigus.

Group 2 Varieties – Lower Quality Breadmaking

CORDIALLE CPB Twyford
Cordialle has a slightly lower yield than Einstein on treated and untreated yield. It has excellent grain qualities and is an early maturing variety. It also has a short stiff straw.

EINSTEIN  Nickerson
This variety currently occupies around15% of the UK wheat area. It has stiff straw, is very high yielding and is particularly suited to the western region. It is also the most popular 2nd wheat.

MASCOT  RAGT(PBI)
Mascot is a high quality and is capable of giving near group 1 quality. It has a 4% yield advantage over Malacca and has stiff straw. Untreated yield is good and there are no major disease weaknesses.

SOISSONS  Elsoms
A very early maturing that has a niche breadmaking market and can achieve similar premiums to Group 1 varieties. It has only moderate standing ability and some disease weaknesses.

Group 3 Varieties – Biscuit/Distilling Quality

CLAIRE  Nickerson
Claire is still widely grown as a first wheat and is particularly suitable for early sowing. It has very good resistance to rust and septoria diseases but is weak on mildew. Straw is only moderately stiff.

CONSORT  Monsanto(PBIC)
Consort was one of the most popular varieties but has declined in popularity largely due to it’s susceptibility to Septoria Tritici. However, it has high grain quality and appearance and can achieve a few pounds over feed. It performs well as a 2nd wheat giving consistent yields in most growing situations. It is also a useful variety in early drilling situations.

ROBIGUS  CPB Twyford
Robigus is very high yielding and has good resistance to Septoria Tritici and Mildew. However, it has  low resistance to yellow rust. It is currently the most widely grown variety in the UK but it does not perform as a 2nd wheat.

Group 4 Varieties – Standard Feed

ALCHEMY  Nickerson
Alchemy is likely to replace Robigus as the No1 wheat in the near future. It has the best all-round disease resistance available, stiff straw when PGR treated and also happens to be the highest yielding variety available. This soft feed wheat has a high specific weight and would be best grown as a 1st wheat.

AMBROSIA  RAGT(PBI)
This variety combines very high yield and stiff straw. Many top yielders like Glasgow and Istabraq are too weak in the straw to safely push hard for yield. Ambrosia has the top yield rating as a 2nd wheat. It is a little weak on Septoria Tritici.

GLADIATOR RAGT(PBI)
A good all round feed variety with moderately stiff straw. Gladiator has a very strong disease profile with no major weaknesses. Seems to perform well when grown as a 1st or 2nd wheat. It has a good specific weight.

Winter Oats

GERALD  SW Seeds
The most popular variety currently grown. Good treated yield with short, relatively stiff straw.

S.W.DALGUISE SW Seeds
The highest yielding variety on the HGCA recommended list with treated yields 4% above Gerald. Good kernal content and specific weight but poor resistance to Mildew and Crown Rust.

S.W.KINROSS SW Seeds
Kinross has 3% more yield than Gerald, has a better kernal content and has longer, yet stiffer straw. It has better resistance to Mildew and Crown Rust and is likely to become the market leader.

Winter Beans

CLIPPER
Equal yield rating to Target and not quite as stiff strawed. However, it has better resistance to Ascochyta.

TARGET
The stiffest strawed variety available. Susceptible to Ascochyta.

WIZARD
Wizard sets a new standard in winter bean agronomy. Whilst it is slightly higher yielding than Target and Clipper it is considerably shorter and stiffer. This can reduce the reliance on high clearance sprayers to limit crop damage and also gives a safer crop structure reducing losses at harvest.

Winter Triticale

FIDELIO
Fidelio was the first semi dwarf Triticale to be introduced and has shorter straw than all the popular varieties. It has been widely grown over the last few years and has a slightly higher protein than most varieties. Can be drilled from September to February.

LAMBERTO
This stiff strawed variety offers very high yields with the flexibility of a wide sowing window. It can be safely sown from September through to April. As it is a semi dwarf variety it is a sensible choice for heavier soil types and fertile conditions.
