Winter Wheat
Hereward RAGT(PBI) |
| This variety is widely accepted by the Flour Millers. It produces consistently high protein and specific weight but lags some 15% behind the top feed varieties on yield and therefore requires a large premium to compete.
MALACCA (CPB Twyford) |
| This variety yields around 2% higher than Hereward. Short, stiff straw and early maturity. In high-yielding circumstances a “dilution effect” can occur, resulting in lower protein. Specific weights are often lower than other milling varieties.
CORDIALLE (CPB Twyford) |
| Cordialle has a slightly lower yield than Einstein on treated and untreated yield. It has excellent grain qualities and is an early maturing variety. It also has a short stiff straw.
EINSTEIN (Nickerson) |
| This variety currently occupies around 15% of the UK wheat area. It has stiff straw, is very high yielding and is particularly suited to the western region. It is also the most popular 2nd wheat.
MASCOT RAGT(PBI) |
| Mascot is a high quality and is capable of giving near group 1 quality. It has a 4% yield advantage over Malacca and has stiff straw. Untreated yield is good and there are no major disease weaknesses.
SOISSONS (Elsoms) |
| A very early maturing that has a niche breadmaking market and can achieve similar premiums to Group 1 varieties. It has only moderate standing ability and some disease weaknesses.
CLAIRE (Nickerson) |
| Claire is still widely grown as a first wheat and is particularly suitable for early sowing. It has very good resistance to rust and septoria diseases but is weak on mildew. Straw is only moderately stiff.
CONSORT Monsanto(PBIC) |
| Consort was one of the most popular varieties but has declined in popularity largely due to it’s susceptibility to Septoria Tritici. However, it has high grain quality and appearance and can achieve a few pounds over feed. It performs well as a 2nd wheat giving consistent yields in most growing situations. It is also a useful variety in early drilling situations.
ROBIGUS (CPB Twyford) |
| Robigus is very high yielding and has good resistance to Septoria Tritici and Mildew. However, it has low resistance to yellow rust. It is currently the most widely grown variety in the UK but it does not perform as a 2nd wheat.
ALCHEMY (Nickerson) |
| Alchemy is likely to replace Robigus as the No1 wheat in the near future. It has the best all-round disease resistance available, stiff straw when PGR treated and also happens to be the highest yielding variety available. This soft feed wheat has a high specific weight and would be best grown as a 1st wheat.
AMBROSIA RAGT(PBI) |
| This variety combines very high yield and stiff straw. Many top yielders like Glasgow and Istabraq are too weak in the straw to safely push hard for yield. Ambrosia has the top yield rating as a 2nd wheat. It is a little weak on Septoria Tritici.
GLADIATOR RAGT(PBI) |
| A good all round feed variety with moderately stiff straw. Gladiator has a very strong disease profile with no major weaknesses. Seems to perform well when grown as a 1st or 2nd wheat. It has a good specific weight.
